The tech world is changing and advancing at a frenzied pace, and our technicians and engineers are continually training to keep up with industry innovations. The year 2017 promises to be one full of exciting new developments for both consumers and businesses. Here are six of the most compelling areas to watch in the year ahead:
1. The “Smart” Explosion
Swimming pools, apps, appliances, and cars are all becoming smarter and more connected than ever before. From your HVAC system and dishwasher to your coffee maker and bathroom scale, home appliances will be able to anticipate your every move and even offer tips and advice. Alexa and Google Home are two examples of Personal Assistants that can help oversee many aspects of your home life wirelessly. IBM’s Watson is doing the same for businesses and their customers.
2. Enhanced Security
With so much connectedness, a higher degree of computer and Internet security will be required. From accusations against the Russians regarding the U.S. elections to the big DDoS attack in October, our awareness of these risks has already been heightened. In 2017, even more, sophisticated attacks will likely be attempted, calling for increased security measures to protect against data breaches. Look for a push for biometrics and facial recognition security authentication systems in larger companies and government branches.
3. Big Data
Big Data isn’t really new, but it continues to evolve and build in importance. Business has a harder and harder time to collect, storing, deciphering and using data effectively. Companies working in this arena will have to become more savvy and refined. Consumers are also growing more weary and annoyed by intrusions into their personal lives and preferences. Look for possible changes in legislation on what companies will be allowed to do regarding collecting and using this data in the future.
4. Privacy Concerns
In June of 2016, Apple included “Differential Privacy” features to try and balance its collection of data to the right of the consumer to have control over their privacy. Unique algorithms now scramble the data to make it somewhat more anonymous, but how much privacy do we really have online? The use of drones has been amplifying privacy concerns as well. Look for even more spirited debates about this topic to arise in 2017.
5. AI (Artificial Intelligence)
Siri, Cortana, Google Home and Amazon Echo are all paving the way for even more AI in 2017. It’s powering search engines and advertising on Google and Facebook. AI is anticipating your needs and personality traits via your online activities to help connect you with ideal advertisers and services. The future of AI is wide open and will no doubt make significant advances in 2017.
6. Virtual Reality
Right now, Google Daydream View, Samsung Gear VR, the Microsoft HoloLens, and Sony Playstation VR are leading the way in virtual reality technology. Facebook bought the Oculus Rift for $2 billion. We are definitely right on the cusp of some exciting innovations in VR. Look for it to enhance theme parks, sporting events, shopping, and social media.
